York Press column: All action ahead of Easter

It has been a jam-packed couple of weeks since my last column where I had an opportunity to reflect on the Chancellor’s Budget. I want to begin by highlighting the fantastic news that inflation has dropped to 3.4 per cent – the lowest in two and a half years. When the Prime Minister came to

Julian welcomes £1.15 million investment for city from government’s Getting Building Fund

August 4, 2020

Julian has welcomed the announcement that York Outer will benefit from £1.15 million of investment, under the Government’s Getting Building Fund.

The £900 million fund, which was announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in June as part of the Conservative Government’s New Deal for Britain – an ambitious economic strategy to rebuild Britain after coronavirus, by putting skills and infrastructure investment at the heart of our economic recovery.

In York Outer, the fund will be used to increasing technical skills capabilities in electric vehicle technologies at York College to increase in capacity for individuals to up/reskill to access the low carbon jobs market; and to build a Digital Skills Academy to ensure the future workforce has the digital skills expected by employers as we move into a more digitally focused era.

Both of these projects build upon commitments made by Julian in the past and in the Conservative Party’s 2019 General Election manifesto to level up the whole country, investing in infrastructure and communities nationwide.

Commenting, Julian Sturdy MP said: As we kickstart the economy to begin to reopen, recover and ultimately thrive after coronavirus, never has the Conservatives’ agenda to level up the whole country been so important.

I am delighted York Outer will directly benefit from this Government money – especially as it is focused on providing training opportunities to equip young people for the skilled work needed in the future. The economic impact of the virus has the potential to be disproportionately felt by young adults and this funding shows the commitment of the Government to place our children’s employability at the centre of our recovery. The funds also allow those in their career who may not be able to current access opportunities to access further training to ensure future prospects.

Through important funds such as this and schemes like Eat Out to Help Out, we can ensure that York’s economy rebounds and continues providing much needed jobs for our city.”

The Getting Building Fund is also providing £300,000 for the internal fit out of the historic Guildhall building in York for use as high-quality office space and business start-up location.  It will provide up to 1,300m2 high quality accessible office workspace with associated facilities and with access to the highest levels of digital connectivity to suit the demand profile of early stage/high growth business. This will be key to supporting the local economy of York in the post Covid 19 recovery phase.
