My Priorities for York Outer

1. Investing in our transport system

I have successfully lobbied the government to agree to dual the A1237 Ring Road, am pressing for the widening of the A64, and for better rail links, to keep our bustling city on the move.

2. More resources for local schools

I have campaigned for and secured a per-pupil funding increase of 6.49% for York schools, and a cash boost of 7.5% for local special needs provision.

3. Giving our NHS everything it needs

The government is putting at least £33.9 billion more per year into the NHS, in addition to everything it requires to beat covid.

I want to build on recent new investment, like the £3.49 million to upgrade York Hospital, the new Foss Park hospital, and new Osbaldwick child mental health centre, including for vital GP services.

4. Protecting the local environment

I successfully supported residents in saving Askham Bog from development in 2020, and we must continue to protect our beautiful Yorkshire home from threats like flooding and plastic waste. I will ensure delivery of the scheduled £34 million for our city’s flood defences, including for Bishopthorpe, Clifton Ings and Westfield Beck.

5. Supporting York’s economic recovery from covid

I pushed for a prompt, safe unlocking to protect livelihoods, and lobbied on behalf of local businesses throughout the pandemic. To rebuild the local economy we must continue to welcome new business investment, especially at the York Central site, and provide work-relevant education to young people, such as through the new York Institute of Technology opened in 2020.

I will also work to ensure York benefits from the government’s massive new science and tech funding to create new skilled jobs, 2 new enterprise-friendly ‘free ports’ in the North, and the relocation of government jobs out of London.
