Julian calls for more support for off-grid homes
October 19, 2022
In a Westminster Hall debate this week, Juliian took the opportunity to support his colleague Fay Jones in calling for further support for off-grid homes, such as those in Rufforth.
While the majority of homes in York Outer are receiving support through the Energy Price Cap, which means energy usage of an average family will cost £2500, those off the mains gas supply network reliant on heating oil are currently only receiving £100. This is at a time the cost of domestic heating oil is rising to three to four times the cost at this time last year.
Speaking after the debate, Julian said:
“Clearly more has to be done. Just as I successfully campaigned for direct support for those living in Park Homes in Acaster Malbis, I am now working with crossbench to lobby for more support for York’s off-grid homes.
In the debate I wanted to highlight the point that off-grid homes are often assumed to be a purely rural issue but in York you only have to travel a few miles from the city centre to find communities reliant on heating oil.
I am now working with other Members of Parliament to build on this Westminster Hall debate and will not rest until all communities in York receive equitable support to help face the challenges of rising costs.”
