£2 million Cash Boost for York Hospital to Improve A&E Services in Winter

Julian Sturdy has welcomed the Health Secretary’s announcement that York Hospital will receive an additional £2 million in funding.
Jeremy Hunt recently announcement that £500 million will be made available over the next two years as part of the Government’s priority to provide a higher standard of care for the elderly.
Julian commented “I am delighted that the Health Secretary has decided to increase York Hospital’s funding in order to help with delivering vital services over the difficult winter months. York and North Yorkshire has one of the highest proportions of over 85s in northern England and the additional funding will greatly assist vulnerable patients who suffer from seasonal health problems such as the flu.”
“Recent statistics reveal that visits to A&E departments across England have risen by a third in the past decade, with one million more visits this year than in 2012. Furthermore, whilst the over 65s make up less than 20% of the population, they occupy nearly 70% of emergency beds in our hospitals. With this in mind, the additional funding will help improve the quality of care provided at York Hospital, especially to older patients, over the winter months”.
The additional health funding will benefit a range of initiatives, including more consultants on weekends; improvements to urgent care, extra district nurses, better care at home; and greater cooperation between the ambulance service and hospitals.
