Julian questions the Chancellor on Tier 2 support for the hospitality and tourism sector
October 22, 2020
Julian questioned the Chancellor in the House of Commons after his announcement of additional support for areas currently under Tier 2 restrictions.
The Chancellor announced that local authorities, including City of York, will receive funding to provide cash grants of up to £2,100 a month to local businesses in the hospitality and tourism sectors impacted by the additional restrictions. He also announced changes to the Job Support Scheme for Tier 2 areas, including reducing the employer contribution to staff wages to 20% for hours worked and 5% for hours not worked. Finally, grants made under the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme will double from 20% to 40%, up to a maximum of £3,750 a month.
Julian thanked the Chancellor for listening to businesses that were unsure how they were going to survive under Tier 2 restrictions, but cautioned that the support must not be used to justify prolonging the restrictions for any longer than is strictly necessary.
