It has been a jam-packed couple of weeks since my last column where I had an opportunity to reflect on the Chancellor’s Budget. I want to begin by highlighting the fantastic news that inflation has dropped to 3.4 per cent – the lowest in two and a half years. When the Prime Minister came to

Update on broadband roll-out in York Outer

February 17, 2017

Julian Sturdy recently organised a meeting with Superfast West Yorkshire and BT to discuss progress in rolling out broadband to villages in our area. Julian uses these meetings as an opportunity to grill local providers on issues which have been raised through casework and discuss their future delivery plans.

The headline news isthat SFWY hope to bring 99.6% broadband coverage by 2020 and the upcoming phase of work is under-budget and ahead of schedule, with surplus funding being reinvested. SFWY are applying for additional funding from the City Growth Deal Fund and Government is providing an extra £13.6m across Yorkshire from the Broadband Delivery UK Programme. This will be welcome news to residents struggling with internet speeds, but Julian is keen that this funding achieves results for our area.

Julian received a progress report for some of the villages in our areas which have struggled with internet speeds:

Rufforth – Cabinet P1 has already been upgraded to fibre broadband and cabinet P3 is due to be upgraded to fibre broadband by the end of December 2017

Askham Bryan – Cabinet planned for December 2017.

Askham Richard – Cabinet planned for December 2017.

Crockey Hill – Cabinet planned for December 2017.

Acaster Malbis –Cabinet planned for December 2017.

Murton – Cabinet planned for December 2017.

Kexby – A directly to exchange cabinet scheduled for March 2018.

Elvington – Cabinets P3, P4 and a new cabinet planned for end of December 2017.

Hessay – A cabinet planned for end of March 2018.

Following the meeting, Julian said:

“Access to high quality internet connection is not a luxury, but a necessity in the modern world. My postbag regularly includes queries from constituents who are struggling with slow internet. I regularly organise meetings with SFWY and internet providers to push for progress in delivering faster access to high quality broadband across our area.

The work taking place is encouraging but I will continue to press for solutions which narrow the digital divide and bring superfast broadband to every property in York Outer”.
