Julian visits local supermarket to champion Yorkshire produce

Last week Julian visited the Co-op store in Poppleton to meet with staff and local suppliers in order to promote Yorkshire produce.
After a store tour and discussing trading conditions with Co-op staff, Julian met with Paul Mercer from Wheldrake whose company Mercer’s manufactures a range of Yorkshire chutneys, preserves, and jams.
The Co-op now works closely with the suppliers to understand and unlock the logistical issues which in the past prevented local firms providing small amounts of their products to stores in York.
Following his store visit Julian said “It was a pleasure to meet the staff at the Poppleton Co-op, and to discuss the growing demand for excellent Yorkshire produce with Paul Mercer. I am delighted that the store now takes orders from over 50 local food manufacturers and I hope other supermarkets follow suit in supporting Yorkshire businesses”.
Simon Cairns, Trading Manager at the Co-op, commented “Our vision is to champion a better way of doing business for you and your communities and what better way for us to do this than to sell as many locally produced goods as possible.”
