Julian’s private members bill features on BBC One’s Country file

This week’s Countryfile on BBC One looked at Julian’s private members bill which was designed to protect horses from neglect.
The Control of Horses Act, which Julian started and carried through the House of Commons, has made three major changes to our current animal welfare laws. Most importantly, the law has dramatically shortened the time it takes to rescue abandoned horses from over two weeks to just four days. The law also protects horses on both public and private land, and allows rescued horses to be gifted to animal welfare sanctuaries for the first time.
The new law has been in force for six months now and the RSPCA, World Horse Welfare, and Councils from across the country have welcomed the changes. Countryfile presenter Tom Heap visited Yorkshire to see how hundreds of abandoned horses have been rescued as a result of the change in the law. Julian will be launching a review to see how the changes are working later this year to ensure that everything is being done to improve horse welfare.
