York Press column: All action ahead of Easter

It has been a jam-packed couple of weeks since my last column where I had an opportunity to reflect on the Chancellor’s Budget. I want to begin by highlighting the fantastic news that inflation has dropped to 3.4 per cent – the lowest in two and a half years. When the Prime Minister came to

Julian speaks up for mental health care provision in the region

December 14, 2015

Last week in Parliament Julian raised the issue of mental health care provision and specially, Bootham Park Hospital.

The debate was discussing the importance of parity of esteem between mental and physical health and Julian was keen to discuss Bootham Park Hospital and press the Minister for a long term solution.

Speaking in the debate, Julian said:

“I believe the Leeds and York NHS Trust has many questions to answer and I would like to know who will bring them to account over a situation that never should have arisen. There was enough opportunities to solve these problems, the Trust had enough warnings. Despite this action was not taken and the facility was closed.

“We have got to deliver a parity of esteem across the board, and I don’t believe at the moment York are getting that parity of esteem.”

The Minister responded to Julian by assuring him that a letter was on its way which would address many of the concerns he raised.

Reflecting on the debate Julian said:

“We need answers and I would support a full inquiry into this deeply worrying chain of events. We need to ensure this never happens again and we need a permanent facility here in York to treat people with mental health conditions and to bring peace of mind to their families. I look forward to receiving the letter from the Minister and can assure constituents that if the concerns I have raised are not addressed then I will be following this up.”
