Julian Meets with Council Over Yearsley Pool Future
December 29, 2014
Julian has recently met with Andrew Lanslett from the City of York Council, who is in charge of reviewing Yearsley Pool’s subsidy.
He also met Yearsley Pool’s site manager, Simon Luck, who showed him around the pool and outlined the changes made during £1.7 million pound refurbishment in 2007.
Gifted to the people of York by Rowntrees in 1909, Yearsley Pool is 50 yards long and provides opportunities for water sports teams, high-level swimming training, and has provisions for those with disabilities.
However, the Pool’s future is uncertain with the proposed development of new facilities at the Community Stadium.
Currently Yearsley Pool’s subsidy stands at £250,000 per year, and whilst the Council have claimed there are no immediate plans to close the pool, it’s future remains unclear.
After the meeting Julian said:
“It is important that we make every effort to ensure that fantastic community facilities like Yearsley Pool stay open to the public. Whilst it is clear that the subsidy cannot continue in its current form, I will be working with the relevant bodies to try and keep this much loved facility open.
“I have been contacted by numerous constituents who are concerned about the Pool’s future and as such, I am very keen for a sustainable solution to be found for this much cherished facility. Over the coming weeks and months, I will be working hard with all interested parties to try and find this solution.”
