York flood risk update
February 21, 2022
I am closely monitoring the developing situation, and encourage any York Outer residents with concerns about flooding or flood defences to contact me.
The River Ouse is already above the level that causes property-level flooding and waters are estimated to peak at around 4.5 metres tomorrow afternoon, below earlier predictions of a peak at over 5 metres.
Besides flooding of low-lying and riverside areas in the city centre, there are now flood warnings in force for Bishopthorpe, Acaster Malbis, Naburn Lock and Fulford/the Fordlands Road area, and some road travel disruption is likely, including in Poppleton. York’s rail services are also affected by track flooding on routes into the city.
I want to warmly thank the Environment Agency and City of York Council staff implementing our local flood response, with the Foss Barrier operating, riverside floodgates closed, and portable pumps and temporary flood barriers being deployed by the Council where necessary.
In Fulford, Council pumps are installed at Germany Beck, alongside sandbags and floodgates. Sandbags have been allocated to Acaster Malbis, and Yorkshire Water pumps are on standby at Elvington and Bishopthorpe.
