Minster FM announcement

May 28, 2020

I am saddened by the announcement that Minster FM is to be absorbed into ‘Greatest Hits Radio North Yorkshire’ after acquisition by Bauer Media, and fear this means the loss of a distinctive local institution.

I have always enjoyed my appearances on Minster, and believe it has made a valuable contribution to the cultural life of our city.

I am also concerned by the potential implications for jobs and contracts of this restructuring for presenters and other staff. I am on hand to assist anyone who is affected in this way, and urge people to contact me if I can be of help.

An important concern is that the loss of the independent Minster station will mean a shift in focus from York news, and that the new network will not provide the same voice for our local community.

I hope the new ‘Greatest Hits’ station rapidly confirms its commitment to proper local broadcasting for our city, and works to ensure this change does not mean a cultural downgrade for York.

Accurate public service broadcasting is essential in times like these, and local residents deserve the highest standards of this from their local radio. sdunhideus
