Julian’s Response to Matt Hancock’s Statement on the Coronavirus Act 2020
October 1, 2020
Having listened to the Health Secretary’s statement in the Commons today, I am satisfied with the concession that the Government has made on increasing parliamentary scrutiny of any new Covid restrictions.
Despite the fact that the backbench amendment was not selected, we have been able to achieve what it set out to do. The Government has made a clear commitment to allow MPs to debate and vote in advance of any new England or UK wide restrictions being introduced.
Whilst many of us across the House were frustrated that the Government only chose to allocate 90 minutes to today’s very important debate, I am prepared to take the Government at their word and hope that going forward we can work effectively to ensure that the right balance is struck between controlling the virus and allowing people to get on with their lives.
