York Press column: All action ahead of Easter

It has been a jam-packed couple of weeks since my last column where I had an opportunity to reflect on the Chancellor’s Budget. I want to begin by highlighting the fantastic news that inflation has dropped to 3.4 per cent – the lowest in two and a half years. When the Prime Minister came to

Julian welcomes Cystic Fibrosis medicine announcement

January 18, 2022

I am delighted by the recent news that the life-changing Kaftrio modular therapy has been approved by regulators for prescription to young children with Cystic Fibrosis.

I understand 6-11 year olds will soon be able to access this treatment, which could be of very considerable help in managing this terrible condition at such a formative stage in their development. Kaftrio can assist some 90% of Cystic Fibrosis patients, so this decision shows an encouraging determination from the NHS and government to ensure the widest possible access to this medicine.

I have represented a number of local residents over several years who are either Cystic Fibrosis patients or family of patients in lobbying the government and the manufacturer Vertex on expanding access to the best medicines, and was relieved when these efforts were rewarded with the decision to provide the amazing Orkambi treatment in October 2019, supplemented with an initial decision on Kaftrio during 2020.

The news access has now been extended even further will be great news for families nationwide. I of course remain available to assist affected constituents further, to push for improvements, and to ensure medicine provision in our city meets local needs in full.”
