Julian visits Curlew Fields Dairies to discuss farm diversification

May 26, 2023

With the warm weather arriving, Julian enjoyed his visit to Curlew Fields Dairies in Hessay to hear firsthand the difficulties dairy farmers are facing as well as see how the farm is diversifying by selling fresh milk and ice cream on site.

Working with Arla, the farm has been able to make their business more sustainable and protect a future for the family business by using an allowance of milk to sell direct to customers. Each week, they can use up to 1000l to make ice cream or to stock their vending machine which sells milkshakes as well as fresh milk. It is through diversifying that small family farms can continue for generations to come.

Other topics discussed were bovine TB, Open Farm Sunday, and the importance of buying British produce where you can.
