York Press column: All action ahead of Easter

It has been a jam-packed couple of weeks since my last column where I had an opportunity to reflect on the Chancellor’s Budget. I want to begin by highlighting the fantastic news that inflation has dropped to 3.4 per cent – the lowest in two and a half years. When the Prime Minister came to

Julian visit Job Centre to see Government’s Plan for Jobs in action

November 25, 2022

Julian was interested to visit one of York’s job centres to see how legislation he has voted for and initiatives rolled out by the DWP actually work and impact the lives of people in York.

Throughout the pandemic, Work Coaches delivered a range of tailored support to claimants including DWP programmes as part of the Government’s Plan for Jobs initiative. The Kickstart Scheme has seen over 162,000 young people move into employment, with many of these securing permanent jobs.

After meeting local Work Coaches, Julian said:

“Work coaches at the Centre are doing a tremendous job. Their dedication and care for the people they are helping into work was clear to see.

There are clearly still very real barriers to work for some people, including childcare costs and not having the right skills. We need to tackle these underlying problems if we want to get more people into work and help realise their potential.

Thanks to the Government’s Plan for Jobs, we have more people on payrolls than ever before but there is still more to be done. Getting more people into work is the best way to help with the rising cost of living. It’s the best way to help people get on in life, support businesses, and grow our economy.”
