Julian supports Global MND Awareness Day
June 22, 2023
This week, Julian attended the Motor Neurone Disease Association’s (MND) Parliamentary drop-in session to mark Global MND Awareness Day.
This was a fantastic opportunity to raise greater awareness over a disease that causes such pain and disruption to the lives of those that it affects, as well as a chance to speak with individuals living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and to discuss a range of issues that matter to them.
The session also allowed Julian to learn more about the brilliant work that the Motor Neurone Disease Association do as the leading national charity focused on improving access to care, research and campaigning for people living with or affected by MND.
It is so important that we continue to work hard to raise awareness of the disease and to invest the time, effort and resources into research and ways to support those living with MND to lead fulfilling and full lives.
Julian welcomes the fact that in November 2021, the Government committed at least £50 million over a five year period to MND research. I understand that £29.5 million of this committed funding has been allocated to specialist research centres so that researchers can access the funding as quickly as possible. As part of this package of investment, £8 million has been allocated for early phase clinical research for MND to speed up innovative new treatments, as well as £1 million for a MND Collaborative Partnership to support the discovery of MND treatments.
The increase in research funding will accelerate progress across the UK to find better treatments for MND, giving people living with the condition the chance of a better quality of life.
Following the event Julian commented,
“It was great to mark Global MND Awareness Day in Parliament by attending the reception hosted by the Motor Neurone Disease Association where I had the opportunity to engage with those that are living with MND and discuss the challenges they face.
It is so important that we continue to raise awareness of the MND and invest the time and effort into researching and securing new treatments to help support those that the disease affects”.
