Julian meets with Foreign Office Minister to present APPG Report on WASH and AMR in developing countries

July 4, 2023

Julian held a productive meeting with Andrew Mitchell MP, Minister for Development and Africa, to promote a report jointly commissioned by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Antibiotics and the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.

The report highlights the link between poor sanitation in developing countries and the risk posed by antimicrobial resistance. This could be addressed for a relatively small amount and be key in our fight against antimicrobial resistance.

The issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has perhaps never been so pressing. It is thought that AMR could contribute to 24 million more people being forced into extreme poverty by 2030 and cause 10 million deaths annually by 2050. To counter these worrisome projections, significant time, investment and global cooperation is needed.

Following the meeting, Julian commented:

“It is fantastic to have such a passionate Minister in this role who understands the issues completely and is eager to make a real difference.

With UK leadership, we hope to bring together other countries to form a global coalition in our fight against AMR ahead of next year’s UNGA High-level Meeting on AMR”
