It has been a jam-packed couple of weeks since my last column where I had an opportunity to reflect on the Chancellor’s Budget. I want to begin by highlighting the fantastic news that inflation has dropped to 3.4 per cent – the lowest in two and a half years. When the Prime Minister came to

Julian slams Labour plans to cut school transport subsidy to Tadcaster Grammar

December 21, 2023

On behalf of families in Copmanthorpe, Bishopthorpe, Askham Richard, Askham Bryan and the surrounding areas, Julian has written to City of York Council as part of the consultation on the proposed removal of discretionary free transport for students from York attending Tadcaster Grammar School.

Alongside York’s Conservative councillors, Julian is opposing the proposed changes as it will impact negatively school choice and he does not support the financial arguments being made to justify the changes.

Speaking about Labour’s proposals, Julian said:

“There is a long history of families from the South West of York sending their children to Tadcaster Grammar School and many move to villages in the area specifically with school places in mind.

“No one knows children better than their own parents and no one size fits all; parents should be able to have a genuine choice of schools so they can select the school whose ethos best fits their child.

“The introduction of travel fees will be a burden for many families and some will have no choice but to send their child to a secondary school within the City of York Council area – all of which are near capacity and would mean the Council would have to pay for student transport, thus not resulting in any saving.

“I implore City of York Council to rethink these proposals and will continue to support all families with children at Tadcaster Grammar School.”
