It has been a jam-packed couple of weeks since my last column where I had an opportunity to reflect on the Chancellor’s Budget. I want to begin by highlighting the fantastic news that inflation has dropped to 3.4 per cent – the lowest in two and a half years. When the Prime Minister came to

Julian welcomes funding to boost energy efficiency of York homes

March 23, 2023

Julian has welcomed a share of £2.5 billion worth of funding to help boost heating efficiency and cut costs in homes across York Outer. The Government has announced £1.4 billion in grant funding under the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF) (£778 million) and Home Upgrade Grant (HUG) (£663 million).

This will benefit the people across the York area with City of York Council receiving £1,000,000 worth of Government funding through the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund and £12,420,000 from the Home Upgrade Grant (HUG) fund. This investment shall boost the efficiency of 60 homes while slashing bills and emissions in conjuncture.

The schemes form part of this Government’s commitment to reduce overall UK energy demand by 15 per cent by 2030, as well as supporting the ambition for the UK to move towards greater energy independence. Furthermore, these initiatives will support the local and national economy through job creation and help us to deliver our ambitious Net Zero 2050 target.

The Home Upgrade Grant is supporting over 25,000 low-income homes across England by installing energy efficiency measures and low carbon heating. Those being aided are typically the worst quality, off grid homes most in need of upgrading, with an EPC rating of D to G. Improving these homes comes with the added benefit of supporting 7,000 jobs

This announcement comes alongside the latest funding of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme update, at around £400 million. This scheme supports public sector bodies to move away from using fossil fuels to generate heat and energy and instead use low carbon technology.

Following the announcement Julian commented,

“I am delighted to see York receiving significant funding which will boost heating efficiency in people’s homes as well as slashing bills and emissions at the same time.

I recognise how difficult recent months have been for people in regards to the increased cost of energy as a result of Putin’s barbaric war in Ukraine and greatly welcome the support provided by this Government through initiatives such as the Energy Price Guarantee, The Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund and The Home Upgrade Grant. We are slashing bills, heating homes, and tackling the urgent need to decarbonise for the sake of our planet and future”.
